The Peninsula of Azuero Azuero is formed by the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME OF AZUERO.
The name of Azuero comes from: Mr.Vicente Azuero y Plata Bueno
Mr. AZUERO, was not a “pelagato” [Panamanian term that means: poor man]… I already have the information regarding this Colombian Sir… let’s see!
VICENTE AZUERO Y PLATA BUENO was born on April 21 st, 1787, in OIBA, place in jurisdiction of the province of DEL SOCORRO, today named province of SANTANDER (COLOMBIA); son of Mr. Ignacio Javier of AZUERO and Micaela PLATA BUENO; Ana Josefa and Juan Nepomuceno Azuero y Plata Bueno were its only two brothers.
He obtained the titles of high school, Licentiate and Doctor in Theology obtained in better schools and universities of the epoch. He was a politician, jurist and writer; considered a great thinker, but was outstanding like doctrinaire politician, enemy of the brute force, valiant, in its opinions and member of the avant-garde of the politics, surely also of the liberals of the epoch which have the better understanding of the truth of the political sciences and the need of the young democracy of their country. He go into in the politics since very young, with Francisco de Paula Santander, who was appointed by SIMON BOLIVAR, as vice President of Nueva Granada. AZUERO Y PLATA, was a representative by the provinces of Socorro, Casanare and El Chocó. He was public prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Justice in 1821 and founder of the Gazette Of Colombia, writer of the Criminal School and that of the Proceder (1823), Judge of High Court of Justice of the Republic of Colombia (1824), and Professor of Law in the School of San Bartolomé. He married a Bogota lady of noble lineage, Mrs. Indalecia Ricaurte and Castro Neira and there were not children.
He dies on September 28 th, 1844 dies at 57 years old. Six years after his death, the Colombians appoint with the name of AZUERO, to the Panamanian peninsula that today still has that name. ... End of the biography of this mister.
I add: .... Then it means then that in 1850, the Colombians named our PENINSULA, with the name of AZUERO. ....It means that we have 153 years to bear silently a name that does not have any identification with us, ... the name of a person that not even put one’s foot in our Isthmus, much less in our PENINSULA. Without denigrating or going beyond the reason. ..... I propose that the peninsula should have another name and also urge the lawyers of the region, educators, and professional in general, students, country people and all the people of the region so that we find an adequate name for the PENINSULA and a new name be submitted to THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY,.... because although AZUERO was a great Colombian citizen, ... we have HUNDRED of GREAT MEN whose names could have the PENINSULA;... of Los Santos; I can suggest many names, nevertheless I prefer that others Herreranos and Santeños give also their suggestions.
According to investigations that I carried out, the creation of the Peninsula of Azuero was by the year of 1855, and was done by the Congress of Nueva Granada. It was formed by the Cantones of Los Santos and Parita and the parochial district of Santa María, including the territory of what today are the provinces of Los Santos and Herrera.
